my experience

Applicable Courses

This semester at Penn State I am enrolled in a class called Media Programming Strategies. This course is all about the necessary steps and tactics used to create a schedule for a TV Station. So far, I have completed a group project where I was part of a team representing a TV Station in Philadelphia. Our mission was to restructure our station by rearranging our current TV schedule and purchasing new content. We were fortunate enough to receive feedback from Paul Schreiber, the Executive VP of Domestic Television. He came into our class during our presentations and negotiations and helped us emulate a real-life situation. Currently, we have started a project where we create our own TV show and will pitch it to the class at the end of the semester.

COMM 385: Media Programming Strategies

Relevant Shows

This is an acknowledgment that I am an avid viewer and follower of the shows illustrated below. I am completely up to date on the latest seasons and have been actively following the programs since:

Grey's Anatomy: 2010

Scandal: 2013

How to Get Away With Murder: 2014

Game of Thrones: 2014

COMM 180: Survey of Electronic Media and Telecommunications

Survey of Electronic Media and Telecommunications focuses on the development of electronic media and telecommunications and the impact it has had on social and political structures on a global scale.  Specifically, the course emphasizes the consequences of the rapidly converging  digital media on society and the economy. At the same time, the course highlights how a global system of communications has been formed due to the converging technologies, further illustrating the societal impact. What was most revealing about this course was the unit that delved into the Hollywood film industry and compared it to other film industries around the world and the influence of Hollywood internationally. My biggest take away from the course is that humor does not translate.

A quick little blurb as to why I follow these shows:

Like most Grey's Anatomy fans, I began watching the show in it's early stages. Since then, I have developed emotional connections with the characters and continue to follow the show because of this. I heard about Scandal through a friend, and after watching one episode, I was hooked. After following Grey's and Scandal, when How to Get Away With Murder premiered, I thought it was only fitting that I tune in to watch the work of Shonda Rhimes, yet again. One of the biggest drawing factors for all of these shows is the strong female lead. Watching Meredith Grey, Olivia Pope, and Annalise Keating develop as characters and illustrate the daily struggles all women face is extraordinarily empowering and makes the program that much more interesting. As far as Game of Thrones goes, I began watching after reading the first book of the series. I have continued to read the series and follow the show. Much like Grey's Anatomy,  I've watched the characters develop and have made that emotional connection with the series .
