Yes, Grey's Anatomy IS Good TV.

As Todd VanDerWerff points out in his article, "TV is at its best when it emotionally connects." Grey's Anatomy is an on-going drama series that seems to do nothing else but connect to it's audience. From the pilot episode, viewers are given a number of characters to connect with and fall in love with. You watch them learn, and grow, and cry. And before you know it, their pain is your pain and suddenly you are crying with them. If that is not an emotionally connected show, then I'm not sure what is.

The AV/TV Club article also points out the importance of the daring voice of Shonda Rhimes. Since The Sopranos, all "good" television has been compared to this show--which is comes from the point of view of a male. A strong male lead paired with a male love life and the struggles of this male. Rhimes is daring with her strong female lead and the multiple female romances on the show. She pushes the boundaries and better yet, she exceeds at doing so. Rhimes is also extremely aware of when the show needs to shift from the "rah rah" emotional/romantic drama to the emotional medical drama. By doing so, she connects with the viewers on a completely other level because this step into the extremely intense medical scenes lets the characters grow and thus only increases the viewers connections with them.

Finally, Rhimes stays true to herself and characters are written off if they are offensive, belligerent, or arrogant. She stays true to her morals and her values, and in an industry that is dominated by mostly males, it is extremely important that she asserts her authority and demands her respect. This is seen throughout the show. When characters on the show make comments that are disrespectful, there is always another character there to point out this undesirable quality. Overall, I would agree with VanDerWerff and say that yes, indeed, Grey's Anatomy has done nothing but constantly prove itself to be good television.
